About
Who am I?
Hagelslag was born and raised in Suriname, in a family where music was never optional. His great-grandmother, Leni Healy, was one of the founders of the foundation that launched SuriPop, the songwriting festival that became a cornerstone of Surinamese music culture. His father fronts d’Orkest, an eclectic eight-piece band from Paramaribo, and his mother’s love of electronic music meant he was pushed to listen and dig for new sounds from an early age.
Today he moves between melodic house, afro house and indie dance — a mix that makes sense coming from where he does. The percussion-driven side of his sound traces back to the rhythms he grew up around in Suriname, while the melodic side reflects a childhood spent absorbing everything from his dad’s band rehearsals to his mom’s record collection.
He got behind the decks for the first time at five years old. After stepping away for a few years, he found his way back to DJing at fourteen, around the same time he was experimenting with production — first making trap beats at thirteen, before shelving them a year later. At eighteen he turned to electronic music with real intent, and by nineteen he had his first official release.
After eighteen years in Suriname, he moved to Amsterdam to pursue his studies and his music career in parallel. Since then, he has played shows across the Netherlands and around the world.
